HostMonster

Reviewer: Ryan S.
I brought my company's corporate website/e-mails over to Hostmonster from another host that shut us off for too many e-mails sent. In the year or so that we have been with Hostmonster, I think we have been down a total of 30 mins one weekend. No complaints. Customer Support was a 2 min hold, answered my questions, were knowledgeable etc. I rate them 4/5 (5 being impossible to obtain in my eye)...

1and1 Hosting

I've been fighting wih 1and1 for 6 months to deal with a domain issue. I've paid them 3 times, yet they apparently aren't registering my payments, and sent me to collections (for a $i domain which I've now paid over $50 for). They're refusing to release my domain to a new registrar. I've spent at least 25 hours on the phone with them over the past 6 months. I'm now resorting to calling every executive I can get a phone number for. However, 1and1 is a german company who is very anti-consumer.
If I could give 1and1 negative ratings for the 1-5 choice here, I would....
Bluehost

I don't have long term data on reliability but after reading all the reviews over the weekend and being surprised at how negative a lot of the feedback was even for the highly rated sites, I wanted to report that my startup process was incredibly painless. The account was created in minutes and I was uploading data in a few more. I had to send in photo id to get ssh access which took till mon morning but otherwise it was quick and easy. One suggestion to bluehost: offer encrypted data access from the start. I wasn't comfortable using the plaintext access methods like ftp till the ssh shell access was approved....

I have been using Dot5 Hosting for almost a year now. They have an excellent assortment of pre-installed software (shopping cart, word press, phpbb) that you can use and you have a good amount of web space at your disposal. Although the price is very cheap, I am going to switch providers when my time is up because their servers are very slow (my page takes forever to load - I have had complaints from my visitors) and their tech support is horrible. If you try to contact them by email, expect to wait several days for a response. That is, if you even get one... ...

It works while it works; and when it is down it is down. Today is Friday, evening prime-time and it is suddenly down, with no word when it plans to come back. Back in Nov-Dec'07 MySQL was down for half day every 3rd day.
Customer&tech support is non-existent.
After recent platform upgrade they changed my main login/pwd and I spent almost 3 weeks(!) trying to reach them and recover access to my site. Also, they "upgraded" Wordpress overriding my own install and config; as a result all my personal Cyrillic language blog content got encoded into unreadable blob. I am still staying with the service since I mostly host travel photoalbums linked via external URLs (also really lazy to move). Otherwise stay away. ...
Inmotion

Inmotion Hosting is a rip off. They sell you on a bunch of crap you don't need. Example, a web builder that my 7 year old could have put together and a tech support team that couldn't even help me set up my email account. What a bunch of hype!!!...

Yahoo Hosting

I have just been through the worst 2-months experience with Yahoo - they shut down the website of which I am webmaster, Join the Boycott, http://www.geocities.com/truthmasters/jointheboycott.htm without notice and without explanation - after responding with form answers which had nothing to with the issue, in frustration I wrote to Yahoo's top executives, Susan Decker, Jerry Yang and company - no response - the "customer service" is simply horrendous and shows a real contempt for customers.
The site has not been put back online and I am giving up on Yahoo.
Join the Boycott was on the basic $4.95 per month plan - as of last time I looked, the space and throughput is miniscule compared with other host packages - only 25G a month - and just 25G a month throughput - with next to no software support (no PHP, MY SQL, Perl, etc.).
Their customer service is a disservice - I suggest you look elsewhere. ...
